If your going to be a success in your marketplace, you need to give back to your community. There are various ways and methods to do this, many of which are not expensive, but the impact it has on others is great!
Here is an example – Every year, our team collects toys two weeks prior to Christmas at our local K-mart store. We have our moving truck at K-mart and advertise that our goal is to fill the truck with toys, which we do. Here is an email I received last year (2005)……
“I am writing you today to say thank you so much for your generosity. My son and I attend Children’s Playroom and our family has been dealing with some very hard times financially for the last year. Last week I was given a gift for my son to open on Christmas morning and was told that you were the one that provided it. I just wanted you to know how much it means to my husband and I to be able to give our son a gift on Christmas morning. He is too young yet (almost 15 months) to understand the concept of Christmas or generosity but with wonderful and caring people like you in the community he has a great head start! Thank you again and have a great holiday!!!

Clients who are transferring into the area and purchase a home with THE JOHN SMITH  TEAM may stay up to 3 nights for free at the Londonderry Inn while searching for their new home.

John Smith Miracle Move Program
We work hand in hand with the Children’s Miracle network at the Penn State Children’s  Hospital.
When a new employee (doctor, administrator, etc.) is transferring into the Medical Center, we provide a free room at our Inn for up to three nights. We also donate 15% of every commission earned back to CMN in the name of the Buyer. We do this now for any employee of the Hershey Medical Center as well as Hershey Foods because of their support for the local CMN hospital.
Support and Sponsor of Firm Foundation
This program based in Harrisburg, PA goes into the state prison and works with convicts to teach them skills to rehabilitate and construct homes in the area. It also has a program that teaches men how to become a father to their sons and daughters. I am working with them currently to find building lots or homes. Over 100 men are involved in this program currently. John Smith Team Reading Program
This is done once a year at local elementary schools. This is done in September at first parent/teacher meeting. A child has to read books, fill out a journal, and have a parent/teacher sign the journal. Local businesses give prizes and we give a t-shirt when the student has completed their reading. They come to our office to pick up the prizes and the certificates. 
John Smith Team Thanksgiving Food Drive
 
We have done this for the last 15 years. We collect food for a few hours at the local K-marts in our area and at our office. The food goes to the local food bank. This is done on a Saturday in early November.
Support and Sponsor for the Center for Parent & Youth Understating
This is a non-profit organization based in Elizabethtown, PA that attempts to break down barriers between a parent and a child. This is a nation-wide ministry featuring Walt Mueller, author and founder. John Smith Team Toy Bank
We collect new toys every year at our office and on one Saturday in early December at the local  K-mart. We fill our moving truck and give the toys to the local rescue mission and a mothers’ support group from a local church.
A Major Sponsor for “Community Day” at Hershey Medical Center
The kick-off for the telethon is the first Saturday of June. The event is attended  by 3,500-4,000 people from the community. It is held on the front lawn of Hershey Medical Center. It includes food, games, displays from different departments at the Medical Center, and entertainment.
A Major Sponsor at the Elizabethtown Fair and Farm Show Week
We purchase over 300 t-shirts, with our logos on, for the clean-up volunteers that are at the fair picking up paper. Usually about 20-30 people are at the fair walking around the fair. The fair is held every year in late August for one week. We received recognition last year for our continued contribution. We have a large display area with our homes and subdivisions; and we market heavily there as over 100,000 people attend every year. People sign up for prizes at local restaurants or movie theater tickets. We get their names, phone numbers, email addresses and ask their interest level in buying or selling homes in the next 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year. Community Champion Program
We recognize someone in the community who is doing something that helps others achieve a better life. It is published in our ad monthly. It can be a child or an adult. We ask for recommendations through our newsletter, emails, or word of mouth. MS Walk in April
We raise funds through our past clients, family & friends for the National Multiple Sclerosis  Society. Members of our team and family members participate in the local MS Walk in Hershey, PA. Almost every real estate professional is who is a member of the local association is also a member of the national organization. This professional affiliation among real estate agents all across the country works to your advantage when you buy or sell out-of-state property.
Your local real estate agent can contact an agency in the area where you want to buy or sell. When the relationship with the out-of-state real estate agent is established, your agent can coordinate arrangements by selecting houses for your consideration and helping you to strike a deal when you have made a selection. Having a local sales professional to help you work out any problems that may arise is a real plus.
