Its Local History

In 1720, like many Pennsylvania towns, Lebanon was settled by German and Dutch colonists. The town quickly began to boom economically after the introduction of a steel mill operated by Bethlehem Steel. Lebanon bologna, a favorite lunchmeat to this day, was also first produced in this town, earning its namesake. In the nearly 300 years of the town's existence, it has accumulated plenty of stories. One of the most interesting revolves around an event that would go on to inspire one of the tales in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous mystery series, Sherlock Holmes.
